Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (Long-range Ultrasonic Technology (LRUT))

Regulatory document: a document establishing rules, general principles or characteristics relating to different activities or their results.

The term “Regulatory document” refers to documents such as standards, technical specifications, codes of practice and instructions [international organization for standardization — ISO].

For non-destructive testing of pipelines long-wave technology is used based on the use of normal ultrasonic waves, which allows you to conduct 100% inspection of pipes without removing the insulation, detect and assess such defects as corrosion, erosion, circumferential cracks on the inner and outer surface of the pipe.

The principle of operation of LRUT technology

To carry out the inspection, access to a small section of pipe without insulation (0.5m) is required to install a ring with ultrasonic transducers. The device emits ultrasonic waves in both directions along the pipe, using the pipe as a waveguide. Ultrasonic transducers create a continuous wave front that provides 100% coverage of the pipe circumference. Normal waves spread over long distances in underground, underwaterpipes, or pipescovered with insulation. Reflecting from defects or structural elements, the wave returns and is recorded by transducers. The inspection is carried out without the use of contact liquid; it can be carried out through the paint, surface cleaning is not required. Acoustic contact is provided by a ring with a built-in pressurized bladder by pressing the transducers to the pipe.

The results of the test are presented in the form of graphs similar to the A-scan of the ultrasonic test, where the horizontal axis is the distance from the installation of the ring to the reflector, and the vertical axis is the signal amplitude, which can be estimated by the size of the defect. It is also possible to determine the location of the defect on the circumference of the pipe. The results are stored in a file for further analysis, reporting, creating a database of signals.

Guided Ultrasonics is the creator and manufacturer of Wavemakerpipeinspection system. It is very important to understand that this system is designed for viewing and primary screen of pipes. This is not a magic system for solving all the problems that arise when inspecting. This system allows you to quickly determine the problem area location on the pipe. The method of directed waves used during inspection  is completely different from the UT traditional methods. Instead of scanning an area of pipe directly beneath the sensors, directional waves travel along the pipe body. This allows you to inspect tens of meters of pipe using a ring of sensors located in one place. In the photo, you can see the ring, located in the place of breaking the insulation. From this point, the waves are sent to both sides of the ring and allow you to control difficult to access places located a great distance from the location of the ring.


The Wavemaker G3 (G4) system allows high-speed testing of long sections of pipes in hard-to-reach places (underground, under water, at height) for corrosion, cutting defects, etc. It is designed to inspect pipes with a diameter of 50 to 1420mm and uses rigid and inflatable portable ring detectors to transmit directional ultrasonic waves along the pipe at a distance of up to 200m in each direction. A comprehensive inspection of gas pipelines and pipelines with filling without their decommissioning, removal of insulation and without the use of contact fluidscan be carried out. The built-in GPS sensor allows you to provide a rigid binding of the scanning point and the detected defects.
